2017 NFL ICY HOT TD, Week 10

What is NFL ICY HOT TD, anyway? I'll tell you—ICY HOT TD = In Case You Had Other Things To Do.

While some of us are able to watch NFL football all Sunday long and follow it up with postgame analysis/highlight shows well into the night...many of us can't. I aim to bring those fans bits of trivia, data, and news  they likely missed on Game Day.

Such as:

 

 

• The New Orleans Saints scored five times on their first six possessions, never punting en route to a 47-10 win over the host Buffalo Bills. The Saints' six rushing TD's set records for A) the most in Saints history, and B) the most ever against Buffalo.

• Before falling to the Detroit Lions 38-24, the visiting Cleveland Browns led 10-0—their first double-digit lead of the season!

• Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater finally returned to the active roster after well over a year's absence, but did not play. No sweat; his teammates still picked up the road win at Washington 38-30. Skins WR Maurice Harris, just summoned from the practice squad, made an incredible one-hand TD catch (confirmed upon review) in defeat. 

• With 3:29 to go in the third quarter, Minnesota's Case Keenum was intercepted by Washington DB D.J. Swearinger. On his very next throw four minutes later, Keenum was again intercepted by Swearinger.

• In host Atlanta's 27-7 drubbing of the Cowboys, DE Adrian Clayborn set a new team record with six sacks—taking full advantage of the absence of Dallas LT Tyron Smith. Only three other men have ever recorded that many in one game: Derrick Thomas (7), Osi Umenyaria (6) and Fred Dean (6). Clayborn also forced two fumbles, recovering one.

 

• On Monday Night Football, Cam Newton and friends set a Panthers record with 548 yards from scrimmage in beating visiting Miami 45-21. Panthers WR Devin Funchess caught five balls for 92 yards and two TD, aiding not only his team, but also our own ROBCASS0's Fantasy Football team.

• Tennessee's 24-20 home win vs. the Bengals marked their sixth win in their first nine games, a feat not achieved by the franchise since 2008. They won despite the record FG streak of K Ryan Succop coming to an end—he had knocked down 56 straight from under 50 yards before missing a 48-yarder in the second quarter.

• More from the second quarter Cincy's loss: their LB Vontaze Burfict joined WR A.J. Green as the second Bengal tossed in successive weeks when he made intentional contact with a ref after being flagged for a late hit. Burfict wasn't exactly shameful when he (finally) exited the field.

• New England decimated the Broncos 41-16 in a game that damn near ruined my Fantasy chances (I have Denver's beleaguered defense and barely won.) Pats QB Tom Brady broke Peyton Manning's record with his 86th regular-season road win, while the Patriots as a whole won their AFC-record 12th straight away from Foxborough (the NFL record is 18, held by the George Seifert-era 49ers.)

• Additionally, New England recorded a special-teams takeaway, blocked punt and kick return TD. You have to go back to 1979 for their last such game. New TE Martellus Bennett, late of Green Bay, debuted with three catches for 38 yards.

• The Broncos had not lost consecutive home games to New England since 1966!

 

• Jacksonville K Josh Lambo's overtime FGA was good despite being tipped by a Chargers defender, earning the Jags a 20-17 road win. Helping put them in position for the W was a fake punt direct-snap to RB Corey Grant, who raced 56 yards for the score. Though the franchise now owns its first three-game win streak since 2013, there is still work to be done—Jacksonville was hit with two separate taunting penalties.

• Host Chicago fell short against the Packers, 23-16, thanks in part to one of the all-time great replay blunders ever. After Bears    Benny Cunningham' was ruled out of bounds at the GB 2-yard line following a 23-yard pass, Bears coach John Fox challenged the call, believing Cunningham scored. Upon review, officialls ruled Cunningham, in fact, fumbled the ball through the end zone, turning Chicago's 1st-and-goal into a touchback and Green Bay possession at their 20! Just...wow. Don't call the cops anytime soon, coach.

 

• With the Cardinals 22-16 home loss to Seattle, coach Bruce Arians fell to 0-4-1 hosting the Seahawks. After tearing his Achilles in the game, Hawks CB Richard Sherman will miss the first games of his six-year career. He wasn't alone—players' injuries piled up to the point of comic absurdity. At one point, two Seattle defensive linemen were knocked out of the game after colliding with one another. 

• In this game, Dion Jordan—inactive since December of 2014—returned to action and tallied a sack for Seattle.

• Not only did the 49ers earn Victory #1 of 2017 over the visiting Giants—K Robbie Gould's early field goal marked their first lead since October 1st at Arizona! Additionally,  illustrating the brevity of San Francisco's leads, WR Louis Murphy's 40-yard reception was their first 1st down of the season while leading!

• With his fifth TD catch of 2017, Giants TE Mark Engram tied New York's rookie TE record, set by Bob Tucker in 1976.

 

• Nothing really worth mentioning from host Tampa's 15-10 win over the Jets....or the Rams 33-7 blowout of visiting Houston...or Pittsburgh's 20-17 road win at Indy.
